Levon Ambartsumian

Honored Artist of Armenia and Honored Artist of Russia, Levon Ambartsumian was born in Moscow in 1956 and began studying violin at the age of three. He attended the Moscow Central Music School and received the Artist's Diploma from the Moscow Conservatory, where his teachers were F.Andrievsly, Y.Yankelevitch, L.Kogan, and I.Bezrodny.

Ambartsumian won First Prize in the Zagreb International Violin Competition in 1977, was a Prizewinner at the Montreal International Competition in 1979, and, in 1981, won the All-Soviet Union Violin Competition in Riga (Latvia).

Unable to accept invitations to visit the West from 1977 to 1988, Ambartsumian performed regularly in all the main cities of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during that period. He also appeared as soloist and recorded for radio and television with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Bolshoi Theater Orchestra, Kirov Opera, and the Philharmonic Orchestras of Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, and Peking, among others. Ambartsumian has collaborated with such noted conductors and composers as Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Fedossev, Maxim Shostakovich, Aram Khatchaturian, Tikhon Khrenikov, Alfred Schnittke, and many others.

Since 1988, he has performed in the USA, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Brazil, and South Korea. In 1989, Ambartsumian founded the Moscow Chamber Orchestra ARCO, which performed regularly in Russia and abroad; the orchestra is now in residence at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia (USA). He devotes himself to contemporary music of Russian and American composers and has released CDs featuring music by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, Vivaldi, Wieniawski, and several contemporary composers, including Schnittke.

Ambartsumian joined the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory in 1978 and was a Visiting Professor at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana (USA) for two years before becoming, in 1995, Franklin Professor of Violin at the University of Georgia School of Music in Athens, Georgia (USA). Ambartsumian has given master classes in Russia, Armenia, South Korea, Canada, Brazil, and France. His former students hold principal positions in major European orchestras in Germany, France, Portugal, and Denmark, and many are prizewinners of international violin competitions.

Moscow Chamber Orchestra ARCO - Founded in 1989 at the Moscow Conservatory by Levon Ambartsumian, ARCO has been in residence at the University of Georgia (US) since 1995. The ensemble performs regularly, has released several CDs, and has recorded for radio and television.
